Asia is now home to many business tycoons holding substantial interests in vital industries located domestically and elsewhere around the world. The formation of business conglomerates is a feature of many Asian economies pioneering new industries and pivoting their countries toward economic growth. Although it is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, Asia continues to grapple with recurring issues of poverty, inequality, poor delivery of services, criminality, and social conflicts. While there have been a number of studies about the zaibatsus in Japan and the chaebols in South Korea, few studies have looked at Southeast Asian conglomerates, the rise of which may have been a more recent phenomenon. It is in this light that Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines, present a compelling case to interrogate the relationship between the rise of conglomerates and their contributions to inclusive development. For several decades, the Philippines has lagged behind most of its more advanced neighbors in terms of growth trajectory, experiencing the beginning of a successful turn-around only in the late 2000s. Have Philippine conglomerates been central to this economic miracle? How have they contributed to addressing inclusive development? What can be learned from the successes and failures of other Asian conglomerates? These are the key themes that this volume seeks to answer that could shed light on how conglomerates have affected the course of the country's economic development.
