This is a book investigates the interactions between literature and philosophy that arise in German and British Romanticism and their idealization of Greece. It focuses primarily on five central literary/philosophical figures: Friedrich Schelling, Friedrich Hoelderlin, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron. What specifically connects this small group of philosophical poets, and one poetic philosopher, is a combined interest in the philosophy of nature and the question of Greece. All were Hellenists who stood directly or indirectly in relation to each other. They all wrote toward the uncovering of some lost secret of Hellas, whose discovery might bring new life to the modern world. Likewise they all confronted the philosophical problem of the era: the question that comes about, in the wake of Kant, as to how the subject can relate to an object beyond itself. William S. Davis discusses how study of the allure of Greece for the Romantics benefits from an understanding of this reformation of Kantian ideas. Those Kantian ideas, in turn, come to life in the context of the poetic reinvention of Greece.
Industry Reviews

"Romanticism, Hellenism, and the Philosophy of Nature nonetheless provides interesting analyses that help reassess these divergent paths. The possibility of such a reassessment is found in the structure of Davis's book, which is framed by an interesting idea that illuminates both post post-Kantian philosophy and logical empiricism."
