The story begins as Lynette and her mother endure almost a dozen moves, through three states, in eight months. Once she settles in their new hometown, a seaside village in Massachusetts south of Boston, Lynette meets Clayton Rydell Martin. Clayton is nineteen, the son of a leading heart surgeon, unsure of becoming his parents' hope for another doctor in the family.

As Clayton and Lynette develop a friendship, more of her unique abilities and challenges are shared while each of them also search for their misplaced futures.
