SPSS Statistics: A Practical Guide gives students step-by-step guidance through the process of using SPSS software to analyse, interpret and report on data.

This spiral bound text is concise yet detailed, and is praised for its friendly, practical, and visual pedagogical approach that focuses on ‘doing’. The illustrated step-by-step examples work through each statistical procedure and are followed by interpretation and reporting of results in APA style. Resources for the instructor include Instructor Manual, PowerPoints, practical exercises and datasets, revision quizzes, syntax sets, and more.

What's New
  • New content – Power Analysis calculations and sample size calculations are new in SPSS 28. The steps for these calculations and explanation of the relevant output are included in Chapter 6. The process is transferable across analysis approaches, therefore students can apply the teachings in these examples to other options
  • NEW explanations of the processes in Syntax, in keeping with SPSS 28
  • Up-to-date with SPSS 28, the latest version of IBM's SPSS Statistics, including automatic calculation for some tests
Features
  • A decision tree printed inside the front cover quickly enables the student to navigate to the correct section of the book based on the data problem they need to solve
  • Key concepts are shown in the 'Chapter overview' at the start of each chapter
  • Step-by-step instructions and full-colour annotated screen shots clearly and visually explain each procedure to help students more easily understand how to use SPSS Statistics version 28
  • Features in the text include: tips in the margin that highlight key considerations about the analysis or give hints that help learners make the best use of the software; the AKA icons identify where key terms in the text are commonly described differently in other contexts with the same meaning; LINK icons direct students to revisit useful topics from other sections or chapters as they progress through the text; and Try it out icons refer to the full data sets and syntax files used in the example (available on instructor website)
  • Checklists at the end of each analysis chapter remind students of key concerns and steps to complete
  • Spiral binding means the text can easily be used side-by-side while working on the computer using SPSS Statistical software
About the Authors

Dr Kellie Bennett is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Western Australia. Kellie teaches in the medical and dental programmes, supervises postgraduate students and has provided statistical advice for a number of large research projects. Kellie’s main research interests include psychological aspects of mental health, medical communication, developmental consequences of substance use, and related statistical analysis and research methodology.

Brody has worked as Senior Research Fellow at the Telethon Kids Institute, as well as in research and teaching roles at the psychology disciplines of Curtin University from 2012-2015 and Murdoch University from 2015-2021 in Western Australia, and his research focuses on surveying instrument development and validation in the space of wellbeing and protective factors. Brody’s enthusiasm towards quantitative data analysis has led to co-authoring two (now three!) textbooks for tertiary students on how to conduct and interpret data analysis, which have been used in hundreds of undergraduate courses in Australia.

Peter Allen was Lecturer in the School of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. He was formerly a lecturer at Curtin University where he taught research methods and statistics to undergraduate students, working with them to solve problems and answer practical questions using IBM SPSS Statistics. Peter's main areas of research interest are online behaviour, online research methods, and research methods pedagogy.
