A collection of eleven horror stories by Richard Davis (1935-2005), famed anthologist whose books include The Year's Best Horror Stories, the Space, Spectre and Tandem Horror series and many others. The author was the story editor for the BBC Late Night Horror series. His short stories appeared in many anthologies in the UK, but this is the first time a collection of his stories has been published. The book includes an introduction by editor David A. Sutton, plus two rare articles and an interview with the author.

Richard Davis never saw a collection of his stories published in his lifetime and this book includes all of the author's short stories, culled from as far back as 1963 and 'The Fourth Pan Book of Horror Stories', up to the 1980s. The collection contains an introduction about his life, the fiction and anthologies, including his work as story editor for the BBC's Late Night Horror series. The book also features two rare articles and an interview with the author, from the late 1960s.

Industry Reviews

Another superb collection of short stories from the always excellent Shadow Publishing, these are pulled from the archives of Richard Davis, former story editor for the BBC, editor of many anthologies and well established author in his own right. The titular 'The Female of the Species' tells of a manipulative woman who dabbled in witchcraft in the hope of living forever through the transmigration of her soul. Killed in a plane crash, her unsuspecting husband begins to find out what kind of a woman she was, and finds his cat gradually changing, becoming more human. (Matthew Johns, Amazon review).

These constitute all of Richard Davis's stories, and illustrate the versatility of his subject matter and the easy style of his writing. (David A. Riley, BFS website).

The eleven stories featured in the present book portray a writer well trained in the genre's canons and literary tricks, providing many entertaining and pleasantly disquieting, shivering moments to the reader. (Mario Guslandi, Shiny Shorts website).

Shadow Publishing's collection of Richard Davis' short fiction, The Female of the Species And Other Terror Tales, is the type of book that I love to see from small presses -- a gathering of never-before-collected tales by an overlooked writer from decades past. (Robert Morrish, Twylight Ridge.net).
