By exploring how Martin Luther, Martin Bucer, and John Calvin interpreted a set of eight messianic psalms (Psalms 2, 8, 16, 22, 45, 72, 110, 188), Sujin Pak elucidates key debates about Christological exegesis during the era of the Protestant reformation. More particularly, Pak examines the exegeses of Luther, Bucer, and Calvin in order to (a) reveal their particular theological emphases and reading strategies, (b) identify their debates over the use of Jewish exegesis and the factors leading to charges of 'judaizing' leveled against Calvin, and (c) demonstrate how Psalms reading and the accusation of judaizing serve distinctive purposes of confessional identity formation. In this way, she portrays the beginnings of those distinctive trends that separated Lutheran and Reformed exegetical principles.
Industry Reviews
"The patient and thoughtful manner in which [Pak] works through the details of her research is thoroughly enjoyable. Her work is trustworthy, calm, and evenhanded. She nicely brings to light the particular concerns that animated the exegete Calvin, as she raises some fascinating connections between his work and that of Jewish exegetes such as David Kimhi. And she does so in a manner that is neither forced nor argumentative. . .This, then, is an insightful, suggestive monograph, a careful, cogent, and exceptional piece of research, which will be of marked interest to different scholarly groups, both early modern and contemporary."--Theological Studies ". . . A serious and important read. . . "--Christian Century "This is a splendid monograph for which Sujin Pak should be commended...The Judaizing Calvin is a careful, cogent, and exceptional piece of research. The fact that the volume is able to work through and discuss several different topics so adeptly is a credit to Pak. It will be welcomed by, and of marked interest to, a range of different scholarly groups, both early modern and contemporary."--Sixteenth Century Journal "Pak's history of exegesis methodology is perfectly suited for the consideration and contextualization of Calvin's interpretation of the messianic psalms... a sophisticated study with a number of important insights." --Journal of Ecumenical Studies
