When Jack Kelly loses his leg in the battle of Peleliu, he isn't crazy about its shoddy replacement. But he adds a little artistic flair and becomes quite attached to his unique creation. However, returning home to 1945 Chicago, he realizes his new leg is the least of his concerns—and the only one his creative talents could fix.
Jack discovers that his girl has eloped with Roger Stoker, a son in Chicago's prominent Stoker & Sons Funeral Home. The family of the soon-to-be newlyweds is opposed to the marriage and is convinced Jack knows where the couple is. The menacing Stoker patriarch persuades Jack to bring them back by kidnapping his prosthetic.
Now, chaperoned by the groom's unhinged brother, Jack must venture into a world of madness, deception, and murder to find the couple, reunite with his dummy appendage, and discover the truth behind a family tragedy.
Jack Kelly made his cameo debut in Machine of War. The Phantom Affliction puts him front and center in a hard-boiled, heart-racing noir embroiled in mystery, humor, and suspense.
