A Smells of the Seasons Book

A blind girl experiences the season through her nose.

As summer thoughts stir in my mind,

I wonder what new smells I'll find.

Since noses surely help us see,

What special scents will call to me?

April, a blind girl, explores the many smells of summer in this delightful rhyming picture book. From her garden to the county fair, to Grandpa's farm, to camping in the forest, to a family barbecue and a holiday picnic, to visiting the animals in the zoo and enjoying the seashore, discover the joys of summer scents. The Smell of Summer helps children understand how we experience the world around us through the sense of smell. Kids will enjoy April's interesting pets and have fun with the activities at the end of the book using their sense of smell.

Industry Reviews

This book helps children find the wonder of all the smells of summer. It's a book full of delightful images and all the many smells there are in the summertime. It's an easy-to-read book for young readers and will bring a smile to their faces. Mary Ann Hake is a wonderful author and she brings sweet words for children and adults to read. This book would make a wonderful addition to any child's bookshelf or even a schoolroom.

This children's book deposits me in my own childhood. Once again, I smell summer through the colorful descriptions and depictions of summers of old. Smelled through the senses of a blind girl, the smells are more precious and vibrant. Thank you for the reminders. Children are encouraged by the beautiful colorful pictures and delightful words to try using other senses besides sight. I appreciate the suggestions at the end for additional exploration ideas for smell.

This sweet children's book about experiencing the summer season through scents is nicely done. It is especially good for introducing children to those who have to experience the world around them without the use of sight. The book has illustrations that will appeal to young children.

A gentle and sweet picture book for young children. The main character, who is blind, describes the different smells of summer. Young readers (and listeners) will see summer in a different way and perhaps be more attentive to the scents that surround them. A great way to get children to think of the senses beyond seeing and hearing. At the end, activities are suggested to continue the learning.
