'The Yummiest Githeri' takes us on a journey to the majestic central highlands of Kenya and introduces us to the tasty African cuisine, githeri. This is the story of a confident young girl, Wanja, who faces bullying and other challenges at school with the help of this yummy bean stew-like dish.

The storybook carries the reader through a spread of lovely words and African imagery. A few Swahili terms are blended in as well, for which there is a translation dictionary. A githeri recipe is also included so you can have fun making some with the kids! 36 pages with 22 colour illustrations. Recommended for ages 5-9.

The children's book by Kwame Nyong'o series offers fresh and authentic stories from the Africa that is often not seen, uplifting and positive narratives from today's continent. These children's books offer young people a great way to learn about and experience African culture.

Industry Reviews

"Yes! The Yummiest Githeri is out! My hunger for Kenyan food is satiated momentarily as I read this latest children's book in the series by Kwame Nyong'o."

- Lupita Nyong'o - actress and author

"The Yummiest Githeri is a wonderful, sensual journey of a girl, her land and her community. Through it we see a new world full of friendship, love and understanding, all served up in a tasty bowl of githeri. It is a universal reminder of the importance of sharing a meal with the people we care for."

- Wanuri Kahiu - filmmaker and author

"My two young children and I love Kwame Nyong'o's books and THE YUMMIEST GITHERI is

undoubtedly the best yet. Vibrant, funny and empathetic - the story grabbed us from the

beginning and held our attention till the end. This is a story with a purpose but it never

strays into unnecessarily 'worthy' territory - testament to this is that my children choose to

read it time and again. However, I feel compelled to issue a warning: it WILL leave you

feeling hungry. My advice is to use the recipe at the back of the book to make your own

yummy githeri and complete the experience."

- Virginia Clay - author
