Beatrice Millstone comes from a long line of Millstones, who have all met untimely ends during their stay at Ashwood, the family estate. When she finds herself desperate and broke, her great Aunt Edie welcomes Beatrice back to her childhood home with open arms... as does the house. Beatrice returns not only knowing that the world sees her family as generationally cursed with inevitable deaths but also with the familiar creaks and whispers in Ashwood, known as the House Things. She soon discovers that everyone who has stayed in Ashwood after she left it fifteen years ago has also disappeared completely, without a trace. Unsure if she can trust her only blood-relative left, Beatrice is thrown into a whirlwind of discovering the truth about what lies inside the walls of the Victorian estate and if coming back was simply a death wish.
