Water has become an economic good and the techno-socio-economic challenges involved in the protection, conservation, recycling and equitable utilization of water are addressed in this volume. An understanding of the linkages and dynamics of interactions involving water is provided in a total of twelve chapters.Chapters one to three constitute theoretical framework, and deal with the principles of hydrogeology, dynamics of water environments, and water quality in relation to water use. The following chapters cover the various applications of water: the techniques of augmentation and conservation of water resources, wastewater reuse systems, irrigated agriculture, industrial and municipal uses of water, water pollution, criteria for the allocation of water to competing users, etiology of diseaes that may be caused by contaminated water, and impacts of climate change on water availability and water use. The twelfth (final) chapter outlines the paradigms of water resources management, by pulling together various strands discussed in previous chapters. Several exercises are worked out dealing with water resources issues. Conversion constants, the endowment of water resources and the extent of water use of the various countries are provided in Appendix I and II. The book will be useful to university students and professionals in the areas of earth, environmental and water sciences and technologies.
