The names Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace are synonymous with pioneering computer science and engineering, their work on the Analytical Engine shifting paradigms and sparking the advent of the computer age in which our society is now based. The one seemingly a stereotypically repressed Englishman, while the other would become an early feminist icon. Without Ada there would have been no Charles, and it is through their ever-strengthening friendship that history was made.
Here, James Essinger lays bear the fascinating story of the gradually intensifying friendship that formed between Charles and Ada, interweaving it with tales of their outstanding professional collaboration. Using personal letters to and from the duo, the true feelings behind their unique friendship are revealed for the first time, adding personality, warmth and passion to the partnership that changed the world.

Industry Reviews
"A portrait of a particularly fascinating woman." --Jezebel on Ada's Algorith
"A tantalizing topic... The story of a society proceeding irrevocably but ambivalently into the modern age, enthralled by advances in science and technology, adapting to new social mores, and yet still beholden to many antiquated traditions." --Wall Street Journal on Ada's Algorith
"Engrossing." --New York Times Book Review on Ada's Algorithm
"Essinger is a terrific storyteller, and he knows a great story when he sees it. Ada's Algorithm is a riveting read." --American Scientist on Ada's Algorith
"Irresistible ... If more people could have understood Babbage's machine the way Lovelace did -- indeed, if they had not all but ignored her paper, perhaps because the author was a woman -- computing might have had a far earlier start." --Chicago Tribune on Ada's Algorith
