Industry Reviews
Palmer (Univ. of Oklahoma) adds more artist and style entries, works of art, and bibliographic entries to this second edition of Historical Dictionary for Romantic Art and Architecture. This edition bills itself as “revised and expanded” from the first edition (CH, Dec'11, 49-1808), and Palmer has indeed added more than 100 pages to its predecessor. Most notable is the increase in the number of images and bibliographic entries. Following a brief chronology of the formative events of the Romantic period, which spanned the period from the early 18th century to late 19th century, is an extensive introduction that provides enough context on Romanticism to help readers understand the succeeding entries. . . those who do not own the first should consider obtaining the second, because the dictionary will be useful for those in the beginning stages of researching Romantic era art history.
Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; graduate students.
