When Captain Devereaux, a British Army officer, is posted to Hindustan, he leaves behind his wife and young child. This parting does not leave him lonely for long, however, and he quickly begins a sexual relationship with Lizzie Wilson, the wife of another British officer. Purportedly autobiographical, Venus in India (or Love Adventures in Hindustan) was written under the pseudonym Charles Devereaux. The author's real identity has never been confirmed.
