Our team read piles of great local fiction in 2023. Our histories and futures collided in works from Kate Mildenhall and Melissa Lucashenko, our grief, longing and belonging came into focus in works from Charlotte Wood, Christos Tsiolkas and Briohny Doyle, and Trent Dalton and Pip Williams delivered heart shaking blockbusters that stay with reader long after the final chapter.
2023 was an excellent year for new fiction globally. Fourth Wing took the book world by storm, Yellowface ripped the book world to shreds, and Tom Lake won the hearts and minds of readers from all walks of life. Our experts particularly loved the inventive spectacle of North Woods, and the epic, sparkling achievement of a novel that is The Bee Sting, and we adored new reads from Emily Henry, Dolly Alderton and Naoise Dolan.
Both local and international mystery and thriller releases were stellar in 2023. We saw the return of some of our favourite characters in follow-ups to The Thursday Murder Club series, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone, and Chris Hammer’s The Tilt. We also saw blockbuster results from new books by Stephen King, Michael Connelly, Candice Fox and more.
The bar for 2023's biographies was set high when Prince Harry released his highly anticipated memoir! But the hits didn't stop coming and we also were wowed and moved by the stories behind other famous faces - Sam Neill, Britney Spears, Elliot Page, Liz Hayes, Wendy Harmer & Silverchair just to name a few. There were were also family stories in Sita Walker's The Good of No Good, and those forgetten in history brought to the forefront thanks to Anna Funder's much acclaimed Wifedom.
2023 has been a cracker year for non-fiction; Leigh Sales, Stan Grant Holly Ringland, Julia Baird, Clementine Ford, Tyson Yunkaporta are just some of the incredible authors feeding our brains with challenging and cutting edge ideas, First Nations knowledge, feminist rallying cries, history from new perspectives, healing through grace and more.
From the last in the record breaking Treehouse series through to Christopher Paolini' highly anticipated return to the world of Eragon in Murtagh, 2023 brought us a spectacular lineup of new children's books!

Every year there are so many incredible cookbooks released into the world, and 2023 was no exception. Alison Roman, Tilly Pamment and Kristen Tibballs flew the flag for sweet treats, showcasing everything from simple cakes to complex chocolate creations. We celebrated the release of two hatted restaurant Ester's eponymous cookbook. And were excited to delve into new offerings from foodie faves Josh Niland, Molly Baz and Danielle Alvarez.
2023 brought us beautiful books both inside and out.
